Well, Coronet Bay at Deception Pass State Parks is lovely, but not for the whole vacation.
John Alland got sick and did not join us, but we did stop at his home on the way to our home.
Our dependable Yanmar YSE8 would not stay running beyond 45 minutes before running out of fuel. Although the fuel pump worked, it lost electrical power without notice and would leave us bleeding and restarting.
We were trapped inside Deception Pass and not willing to have the engine die when we were in the Pass and without wind.
We finally made our break for it and got about 8 miles before the engine died and would not restart.
Late-afternoon -- tide about to turn--no wind---no harbor within sight--nasty currents at all exits from the large bay we were in---
Water depth well over 100 feet everywhere--Rocky Shoreline ==
Only one more day before we had to jump in the car for home.
Result! A call to Vessel Assist. We were between two bases, one where we wanted to go and the other back at Coronet Bay where we had our car and trailer. Back we went !
Then we tried to get our tow to take us through the Pass against a 7 1/2 knot current and the tumbling waters. He tried, but 250 HP were not enough to pull us through and we retreated to a quiet bay around the corner from Deception Pass.
Then, the E Ticket Ride in the tow boat through those rapids. WEEEEEE !
Next morning we picked up the boat and brought it to the trailer.
ONE LESSON LEARNED. The bow cleatsw held up through a really wild and stressful attempt through the rapids. I didn't realize until after the ride, what a chance I had taken. Lucky they didn't pull out of the boat.
