Had a great day of sailing of Friday afternoon.  Temps in the high 60's, winds 15-25 and a bit of ice still left on the shore.  Absolutely delightful.

Glad you are in.  Good to hear tropical Michigan provides early launches.

We hit 20 degrees last night.  Still waiting on summer's start.

My wife and I slept on the boat Saturday up in Fish Creek through the frost advisory.  With two people in the forward cabin it wasn't too bad.

Are you planning on launching soon?

I am hoping for an uneventful recore under the steering pedestal.  Perhaps as early as july 4th given family schedules.  I just finished new hatch boards for fore and aft cabins and have completed the ipe panels (see gallery).  All in all I have a lot of loose ends to pull together over the next month.  I have completed the mooring and hope to drop it in this week as there is competition for moorings now given the economy.

Stay tuned and wish me luck.

Josh

Sure.

I used baltic birch plywood (1/2") and painted them to match the yellow stripe on the hull.   I also had to make new guides.
They are in the garage.  I can snap a photo today.

This was easier than I thought:

- take a width measurement at the top and bottom of the hatch opening.
- determine the height of the opening
- determine how large the boards need to be (height).  I used 13", 26" then whatever was left for the top board on each board.
- transfer the panel height marks onto the centerline.  Project the lines outward.
- connect the width measurements from the top and bottom marks.

I cut everything out using a tablesaw/jigsaw.  I was able to get both boards from a single 4x8 sheet of plywood ~$65.

I painted the boards using exterior house paint.  I used flat paint, if you do this you should used satin at least as it marks up easily.  If you want to spend money, polyurethane marine paint is also excellent.  The key is to spend extra money to get proper plywood.  The baltic birch is assembled with exterior grade glue.

Cheers,

josh

Hi Rob,

Here are the photos.  Let me know if you have any questions.
As I get things installed, I will add more photos to the gallery.  Saying that, I am going to spend the next few weekends on the cockpit recore.
