My aft rail had been removed and rebedded a few years ago.  Even so the port rail had taken a good amount of stress and had cracked the fiberglass at the base.

As a fix, I installed 1/2 pipe about 5" long as a backing plate below, which fits nicely into the groove.  Very solid now.  After getting all of the stantions done and rebedded.  I noticed that the starboard stantion was cracked almost all the way through and had to take the entire thing off.

Oh well, it will be very solid when it is done.

After reading Bob's comments, I checked mine and found no cracks, but the same post is loose.  After the record setting heatwaves moves on, I'll climb in to see what's going on.

Also have found that all of my posts are mounted on what looks like black rubber gaskets.  Have not seen or heard of this on other boats.  Anyone else got this ?

When I took the aft rail to the welding shop it turned out that all of the welds were cracked.  A weak spot and worth checking out.

My aft rail is solid as a rock now.  Worth the effort.
