I have a 1976 Dawson hull # 210.  My boat is ketch rigged and there's winches, cleats and track etc. mounted on the aft cabin.  I found out the other day when I was removing the hardware that there isn't any balsa core in the aft cabin top. I'm curious to see if this is the case with other Dawsons or if it's just with the Ketch rig. Is there anyone that has checked the aft cabin?  I also noticed that the chainplates and the stantions do not have any backing plates on them. I'm going to add backing plates since that would definately improve the boat and help get rid of the stress cracks from pulling on the stantions. I appreciate any feedback from the group. Have a great day!

I am not positive, but when I rebedded my deck hardware I am fairly certain it was not cored on the aft cabin.  I think the sloop rig is more appropriate for such a small craft.  I would be interested in hearing from someone who sails a ketch.

Bob,
Thanks for the information. Since someone is not very likely to go on top of hte aft cabin it makes sense that it isn't cored. I just wanted to be sure.

How thick was the glass?

My guess is the aft cabin top has enough compound curvature to support itself without the need for additional core to increase stiffness.  I used to own a VW beetle and its front fenders were flimsy until they were mounted on the body.  Once mounted, you could sit on them without defection.  No core is preferred since there are blocks for main tackle and it is used to raise the mast.

Love the list.
