WOW,  sounds like a CUSTOM rig.  I'd think that in order to mount a mast on the cabin top, you'd have to be aft of the hatch.  This starts to sound more like a Yawl, and would sail differently and present some interesting rig and running rigging issues.  Dont be reluctant to share the photo with us. 

Seems that you could easily remove this rig.  If your boom is around 10 feet long, it is the standard rig and should sail well as is.  You could choose to keep the mizzen and have something to play with for fun.

There is a PD26 ketch for sale on Craig's list. There are good pix of it at http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/boa/1425335731.html. (Maybe it's the one you see.) It shows a mizzen mounted aft of the aft cabin hatch. It looks like a customized rig. The mainsail and mainmast look like the basic sloop rig. I also see what looks like a custom bowsprit with the jib mounted slightly forward of the bow stem. They may have moved the jib forward to move the center of the sail plan forward with the addition of the mizzen. Looks like they knew what they were doing.

Interestingly, the Craig's listing includes one of the original publicity photos of a ketch rig with the mast mounted just fore of the aft cabin.

The modified ketch rig looks like it would handle like a yawl. The mizzen would be good for stabilizing the boat at anchor. I'd keep it and try sailing with different sail combos in different conditions. The only thing I'd be wary of is the way the mizzen sheet appears to be cleated on the stern pulpit. From experience, the stern pulpit is weakly seated to the deck.

This boat was originally from Menominee, MI. my favorite sailing destination.  Never saw it in the water.  Talked to the owner at one point.  I think it was in storage for some time.

As far as I know... the ketch rig is factory installed.  The rumor from the previous owner was that it was originally owned by the owner of parker dawson yachts.  Not so sure about that, but that was the rumor.  The one picture was straight from this website I believe.  I just thought it was a cool photo.

Yes, there is a boom kicker... just depends on the age of the picture as to whether or not you see it.

The previous owner of the boat lived in Menomonee Michigan... I purchased it 5 years ago and have sailed it on Lake Winnebago in WI.
