i have a 1973 midship that i am working on and plan to sail someday. she has hydraulic wheel steering. seems to work o.k. i am wondering what a person would do if you lost steering because of a cable failure or in my case a failure to the hydraulic system.i am a newby to this website.i am also wondering if the midship is a tender boat with only 1000# keel. i recently spent a couple of nights aboard a catalina 25 and really wanted to go onshore a couple of times.i had to swim to shore. seems like the midship would be a good boat to overnight on. her name is hungry eye from maryland. does anyone know of any history about this boat? hull #103. i sail a lake in tennessee in about 5 to 15 knots of wind most of the time.thanks.

The boat is not tender and will stand up to a good blow.  Reef early, she sails best not overpowered.

It sounds like you have a push pull cable, not hydraulic.  Do you have a wheel or tiller?

By chance was the boat you bought from Oxford MD, with an outboard?

thank you for your reply.the boat does not have push pull cables. it has hydraulic lines, a small cylinder at the stern inside the aft cabin, and a container inside the port locker in the cockpit. the thing seems to work fine.i got the boat from the chesapeake bay maritime museum in st. michaels md. the boat does have an outboard. the inboard had already been removed when i got the boat.the boat had a slight leak where the prop shaft would have went through.does an outboard work well? the boat has wheel steering.i have repaired the leak.the hull # is 106. thank you very much for any info.

Hmmm,

I've been aware of only one boat with Hydraulic steering and it was at that time on the Western Shore of the bay.  It was being offered for sale by a broker, with a photo and a very lengthy description of modifications that had been done.  At that time, it claimed a 15 or 16 HP Yanmar.

When I contacted the broker, he sail that he was removing it from his listings because the owner wasn't cooperative and had not been taking care of the boat for showing.  I was never able to identify the hull number or actual location.

I do have the listing in the bottom of a box somewhere and will be happy to mail it to you when found.

Yes that is the boat I saw in Oxford a few years ago.  Congratulations.
