Out past the Sturgeon Bay Coast Guard station, into Lake Michigan.

Had a chance sail this weekend in winds of 30+, with gusts to 40 this weekend.  Started out with three reefs in the main, and hanked on storm jib. Wind is from the NW, an offshore breeze.  Waves very small, it is easy to stay close to shore.

I have only used the storm jibe a couple of other times, with mixed results.  The sail is a very small, high cut, and rigged high off the deck.  The wind strong and consistent, with seas not much of a factor.  I took one reef out of the main.  Allowing the boat to maket 6+ knots, and handle gusts into the forties.

Having the small foresail up, made the mainsail drive the boat.  The boat sailed well, even close to the wind (remeber no waves).  Much better than being overpowered, with working jib up, spilling the main in an attempt to maintain control.

Most of you probably have furlers, what a concept.  Very gratifying to see the boat handle strong winds, using the right sail combination.

Bob
