I have tried unsucessfully to reach the owners of Bob's boat and Bob as well.  In examining the pictures it was the older style of vertical vane.  After much research I was talked out of using this older technology in favor of a pendulum style vane.

Got a little distracted with work and ice sailing.  Check out this boat I was able to sail last weekend.  It steers using the sails only, jib for downwind and main for upwind.  It was designed to be able to sail on ice or water in the late 1700s.

Passed through the, "Strictly Sail," show in Oakland last week.  It was a really hurried trip, so had little chance to wait that the various windvane vendors booths to get info.  I was astounded at some of the prices however and can certainly understand why Bob wants to build his own.

Spent no money .
