Hey fellow boat nerds!

This evening, I wrote down an idea presented by a friend to replace the wet core under the steering pedestal and broken core in my engine hatch.  The entire process involves making ipe or teak panels on the cockpit sole or engine hatch to cover repairs.  The changes presented will be documented along the way -- at this time I am currently in idea mode but I hope to have the mods made before early summer.

Details on the EngineHatch post below:

Josh,

Your site is fantastic.  I wish that I had documented all the work that I have done on my boat.  This will be a great resource to all.

Thanks.  I hope it is useful to someone other than myself.  I have more notes to post and will be changing the layout.  Out out respect for the boat and this site, all major updates will be cross posted here as this site is the primary reason I purchased my Dawson 26.   I expect the journal and forum may provide additional insight into the boat for other potential owners.

Josh,
While planning the steering refit, be aware that two folks have changed the system slightlhy.

Dan Underwood had a boat where the wheel was moved aft and to the side, to allow better cockpit access for folks moving around.

Lowell installed a Yanmar IGM series engine and had to build up a taller hatch.  He seemed to like the raised cockpit sole in that area..Stve  partly offline while fixing my knee.

Thanks Steve,

Bummer about the knee.

I will eval each option during the rework. Someone along the way mentioned adding material under the pedestal to stiffen the sole.  I can't help but wonder if all deflection in the pedestal is magnified due to compromised sole core.  For owners with known good soles, due you feel any additional material is necessary to reduce pedestal movement, say when you bump it with your rear?

Hi everyone,

I am focusing on the recore of the cockpit under the steering pedestal.  We are enjoying a warm up so I am sprinting on the details and plan to get two panels made over the next few weeks.

Image made using a tool called Qcad.  First time I have used a cad program.  Neat.  It helped give me a visual.  I am interested to see how close the actual is to the schematic.

The measurements were made based on cockpit sole templates from a few weeks ago.  I will post photos here as things develop.  At the same time, I am going to make an additional panel to cover the engine hatch.  The shape will closely follow the nonskid pattern.  Also purchased  some hardware to attach my engine hatch to the boat (no hinges or latch on my engine hatch).

real photos to follow.  Hoping by the end of the week to have a source for the wood.  It will be <= 3/16" thick and edge grained ipe.

Also the plank gap is 3/16"  I am using tile spacers to provide consistent gaps.

cheers,

Josh Richard
