Would anyone like to comment on their D26 or PD26 steering cables?

Have you ever replaced it? How?

How did you know you needed to replace it?

Do you have any wisdom to share about them?

My cable is probably original equipment, which makes it 31 y/o this year (2006). I seems to be in fine shape, but at the stern corner where it come up from the bilge and makes a 90 degree turn toward the center, where the rudder carriage arm is, it has some casing cracks. The cable strands beneath and darkened from surface rust, but I see no signs of other wear.

I appreciate your replies.

If nothing else, go check your cable. This is one place too many people skimp/overlook.

I replaced my cable.  It was very hard to find one that would work.  The one I finally found was a bit too long and I had to run it upp the side of the aft cabin to make it work properly.

In your situation, I would recommend trying to lubricate the cable and seal up the cracks as good as you can.

I have heard that some Dawsons have two cables, although I have never seen one.

Best of luck!

All is not as it seems !!  Many of us have assumed that the wheel steering on our boats is from EDSON.  The Parker Dawson series may all be done that way and Edson has records to help us.

I have Hull 270, a Dawson made in North Las Vegas in 1977 as the data plate states.  The Emblem on the Steering Wheel and the ends of the engine control levers has an ANCHOR with the Initials D A included.  I took this to represent, "Danforth Anchor," a surprise to me.

A helpful gent at Edson told me that this was not Danforth, but the Don Allen Company.  He also stated that that company went out of business about the time my boat was made, and that none of the parts are interchageable with Edson equipment.  Has anyone heaard of a source of parts for these systems ?

Do others of you have the Don Allen system?  If so, let's try to figure out how long they were used.  Was another system used on the early boats ?

I have the Don Allen Steering on Skeena #253. I replaced a composite shim in the rack and pinion gears when it failed about 15 years ago. I used a greased strip of stainless steel which I further shimmed to eliminate backlash inthe gears.

Large "Morse" cables are available custom made for agricultural machinery. They are used to flexibly transmit the power of hydralic cylinders to locations where the cylinders will not fit.

The Edson system is ideal for aft cockpits where the cables are easily routed from the steering wheel to the rudder. Using sheaves to route 2 cables in tension around the aft cabin is not easily accomplished.
