Here's my Nav Station set-up, VHF radio, AM/FM CD player, fathometer, Clock, tempature/humidity display, (the barometer is missing from the Stbd side). the toggle switch to port is auto/off/manual illuminated bilge pump switch, the cubby hole is for navagation instruments
Plus lap top with SeaClear II navagation software installed and Garmin Etrex GPS interface. I just saw in an old Cruising World Mag the dinette table cut out and a laptop recessed to keep it in place and the cut out hinged to cover everthing up.
Everything is visible from the helm.
Below to starboard are 2 12v DC panels (9 circuts) with volt meter and 12v DC jack that I have instaled to handle system requirements, behind the panels, mounted on the liner are plus & minus bus bars.
The teak the holds the chart lamp is the raceway for the wiring.

In the last 2 weeks I have bid, unsuccessfuly, on marine radar units that have gone for under $1000.00, I'll keep trying.

Herb,

Very nice setup.  My VHF and CD player are mounted on the ceiling to starboard of the companionway.  I would ultimately like to have a swing out display for a multifunction Garmin plotter/radar/sounder.  You seem to be quite handy as well.

It looks as though you get some cruising in.  Where do you sail?  Any extended cruises?

If anyone would like templates and/or a three view  drawing for the nav station let me know.
If the only tool's you own are a drill and a sabre saw you can build it.

sketch's and construction details
The box construction is 3/4" sq pine and 1/4" plywood, I used teak faced ply left over from my weather board rebuild, however, the big box DIY stores have some nice Birch faced 1/4 ply that may be used and can be stained, varnished or painted, also used pine 3/4 x 3/4  molding stained to match the teak.
I used 3/4 square pine kerfed to allow it to conform to the overhead camber and spaced to allow the box to fit over, be careful of your screw length here and fasten with #8 screws
The bottom and vertical cleats are also 3/4 sq pine. the only fasteners used are on the cleats on the overhead and screws to hold the box up and brads on the out side corner molding, everything else is glued. You can make a template for the top curvature using construction paper or scribe right to the plywood
