I bought this boat in 1996 in Cleveland and towed it back to the Ann Arbor Mich area. I keep it near Traverse City in Lake Michigan. It has: Roller Furling, 150 jib, cruising chute and chute scoop, Loran, GPS, Depth, Knot log, Wind Instrument, Auto Pilot, Spreader lights for night use, Electric winch on Keel, 8 or 9 line clutches, a parallel backup fuel system with 2nd filter and fuel pump for Yanmar 1GM10,Diesel, Split Backstay, Instrument panel with tach, fuel, oil pr., volt, amp, hourmeter guages, put a charcoal water filter in the water supply line, non pressurized alcohol stove, head in front and portipotti in rear cabin, water filter on engine cooling pickup line, all interior teak varnished, full canvas to enclose the cockpit with mosquito net screens for each hatch. Seems like I work on it every spring till July 4 before I get it in the water. Phew!
Someday, I want to get it in the Gulf of Mexico and sail to Fort Jefferson on the Dry Tortugas. Would also like to try the Gulf of California in Baja country.

Nice looking boat. I would love to see pics of the split backstay, the clutches and instrument panel. I am going to add an adjustable backstay this year. Did you do the mod on the split back stay or was it purchased that way?

My boat isn't a Dawson, but a fore runner of the Dawson known as an Essex. The forward cabin is bigger and mine is katch rigged. I have just started finding information about my boat after owning it for 11 years. LLoweke, I would like to see more pictures of your boat. I also live in Michigan and have my boat in a slip in Muskegon. http://www.vansplace.net/essex.html

The Essex was designed in 1972 from a Macgregor Venture 25 hull. The Dawson was originally the Midship which was designed around 1970 - 71. The Essex is a much lighter boat with a displacement of around 3,000 lbs. There weren't as many Essex's manufactured and they are much more rarer than the Midship - Dawson - Parker Dawson - Bombay 26 - Nauset 26 (all the names for the Dawson).

Hi, We live in Easton Massachusetts and have recently purchased a 1983 Parker Dawson 26 ft.sailboat. We know very little about sailing but have a strong interest in both leaarning to sail and restoring the boat. Any information on where we can get parts and lots of sailing information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Janine. The ParkerDawson is a great boat for the Buzzards Bay and Narragansett Bay area. I just moved from there. We had a great time in ours exploring the area. There are a couple of websites ( http://www.impulz.net/buzzardsbay/boating.htm to name one) that have lots of info on destinations for the area. In terms of restoring there are several local places that can help. 1. Rigging Loft in Fairhaven if you need any help with Standing Rigging or Keel cable help. 2. Any of the sailmakers for sails. I happened to use the Doyle sailmakers and was very pleased. 3. Mack Boring Parts Co. is located in Middleboro for parts for the yanmar engine. 4. Rig Rite, Inc. ( http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/3350-MORC.html)in Warwick, RI for original replacement spars. You are in a great area for help if you need it up there. Best of luck. Hi Dan, Thanks for all the information. We have heard that moorings are hard to come by, any infromation on how to aquire one for either the Cape Cod area or Rhode Island? Some of the Teak Panels are warped and the wood will have to be replaced....has anyone out there tackled this problem?

Hi Janine, There are several companies around your area that can do the teak work although it would be cheaper to buy the teak and do it yourself or have a friend that is handy at woodworking do it for you. I was lucky on the mooring issue. My family has a couple of cottages on the Westport River and we have two family owned moorings. Westport Harbor can be tricky but we are very familiar with it and never had a problem. CKaro has his moored in Plymouth. There are many places around. Depends on what area you want to travel back forth from. If you need more help in finding a mooring you can email me at Dan@DANandABBIE.com. Hi Janine, I am planning to use dock space in Fall River next year. I own a mooring in Plymouth and could possible let you use it for the 2004 season. I live in Lakeville, as Dan once did, who has now luckily located to points south. Any help you need, let me know. I have owned my PD for 10 years now and have done many upgrades. You can reach me at ckaro@comcast.net. Chris Karo s/v Kimberly Marie Midship 25 Plymouth MA ~~~~~_/)~~~~~

Lowell ... we have corresponded in the past but this post just rang a bell. You say you purchased her in Cleveland, was her name Goodbye Columbus by any chance?
Years ago we met a couple at the Oak Point State Park on the West shore of Put-In-Bay of South Bass Island. The fact that we could get the fixed-keel Slow Ride into the docks there is an indication of how long ago (during the very high water maybe ten years ago).
These folks were Thistle sailors who lived in Columbus, Ohio. Upon having reached their 60's, they said they had purchased the (1984 as I remember) PD 26 and named her Goodbye Columbus. lol The thistles had become too athletic for them.
Many times I have regretted not getting their contact information and have not seen them since. They kept the boat on Catawba Island (which is also where Slow Ride lived for many years when she was named Double Bubble.
They said that they did an annual trailer trip to the North Channel so if this is the same boat she isn't too far from her old Fall cruising ground now! She was the same sort of mint color as your photo posted here.

Hello Tom, Just saw your question on the PD web site regarding the previous owner. I purchased the boat in Cleveland but the original name was Kestrel, not Goodby Columbus. Glad to hear you are still sailing Slow Ride. I have been making annual trips to the North Channel. Lowell
