Thought I would go up in the chain locker and check to see if there were any backing plates on the cleats on my PD, Guess what! there ain't any, ditto for the stern cleats. It looks like you could get a 1" or 1 1/4 wide by at least 6" long 1/4" thick 6061 T6 plate in the there. a few bucks spent here would, hopefully, spare you Costas fate.
This is the next to do on my list.
