1973 ParkerDawson, Homeport: Plymouth, MA.  Upgrades; Refrigeration, CapeHorn Windvane Steering, Wind Generator, solar panels, 2 more gel batteries (1 starting battery, one dual purpose and 2 big gels), head with holding tank that can be pumped offshore, All new standing rigging this year.  I purchased this boat back in 1994.  The prevous and original owner was sick and his son hauled the boat for the winter.  Forgot to winterize and the inboard block cracked.  Illness forced the sale, but he didn't want to sell the boat w/o aux power.  A local boat yord put on a 35hp johnson o/b.  I upgraded to a 20hp a few years back.  Was sailing to the Cheaspeake from Cape Cod Bay and my rudder cracked.  I may of hit something, I was 15 miles south of Block Isl, RI.  Awaiting a new rudder.

Chris,

Very nice looking boat.  I would be interested in hearing how your Cape Horn works and which model you have.  I am in the process of building a self steering gear myself.

I am also curious what the large wheel up the mast behind the forestay is.

Chris,

I spent a lot of time flying over those water many years back.  So the question is, "How did you get back from south of Block Island ?"

How did I get back?  That question sat in my mind for about an hour, as it was 3AM and I was a little tired.  I was able to retrieve both halves or the rudder.  I took the bottom half of the rudder, slid it into the frame, put the pin thru the shoal draft hole to hold the rudder at height, then wrapped line around the rudder and frame.  I had about 15' of rudder in the water.  Motored at 4kts so as not to put to much strain on the rudder.  There were still left over swells from the hurricane that passed thru.  I motored to Standish Marina on the Sakonnet River in Tiverton RI, where Ken moved some boats around to make room for me.  I was told those guys were the best and most helpful. So far, so good.

Made the trip south this year!  Left Plymouth, MA in mid Sept. 09.  Sailed a straight course offshore to the Chesapeake Bay.  At times I was over 100 miles off the eastern seaboard.  What a great feeling.  The trip took me 7 days (singlehanded) to get to Elizabeth City, NC, where the boat is wintering.  After entering into the Chesapeake, I headed south down the Elizabeth River, took a right into the Dismal Swamp ICW.  This was a great trip and the PD handled well.  I was in a NorthEaster with winds gusting over 45kts.  I have some pictures with the boat in 18 foot seas.  Email me and I'll send you some shots of the trip.  I had to return to New England due to family matters, but looking forward to Spring where I will pick up and continue south.

i would like to hear what your sail plan was in 45 knots.  I would have had 3 reefs in the main and my storm jib up.  I see you have a furler.  What size sail is on it and how does it perform reefed down hard?

Thanks,

bob
