This is my first boat. I bought it for basically marina fees. It's in "interesting" shape. I know it isn't a PD but it's similar so I was wondering what kind of gas outboard goes in the beast? Any help would be appreciated as it would save me time in my awesome learning curve.

Greetings Jerry
since you wont be able to reach over the tramsom to rope start the engine you will need an electric start model. The 4 strokes in the 9.9 HP range have plenty of power and weigh a little over 100 pounds so you need to be sure the transom is beefy enough. I think 6 HP would be the smallest I would use.
Good luck on the project.

Okay so a 9.9 hp would be best. Been Checking on ebay and I see some 15 hp engines and a couple of 9.9 engines but I don't know whether I need a long shaft or short shaft.

You definitely need a long shaft and will need to put a substantial backing plate on the engine mount.

When Placing a transom mounted O/B, I found that the best O/B lift is the most expensive one.  Do not skimp on this.  Line up the lift and make 2 angle peices of hardwood (teak perfered) (shims) on the exterior of the transom so the motor lift mounts is level.  On the interior, a backing board of at least 5/8" and fiberglased over.  Use the largest SS bolts (4) available to fit through the mount.  Electrical, throttle, shift and gas lines will be at your descretion.  Mine come through the deck and down around to the o/b.  Try to eliminate as much bend as possible when running the control lines, etc.  I have a 20HP 2 stroke, A 15 HP 4 stroke, electric start would be more the adequate.

The YAMAHA  hi thrust models have been getting great reviews from folks on other heavy boat discussion groups. There are several  in that family, with differing mounts, controls etc.

Do I recall that you are talking about a, "Well," inside the hull, not a mount on the stern ?

Jerry,

There is a little information on the Essex in our, "Links," section.

Go to the second one with the "Tripod" web page  It has a letter and a small brochure copy .  Might be helpful.

Steve,
There is a well to mount the outboard. I used the stuff in the links section as a start and I've tracked down a newer email address for the designers son. cherubiniand@aol.com I've sent an email. I'll let you know if I get a response. I'm also in contact with another optimist with a later model, who is also restoring.
