Companionway Trim

The teak trim at the bottom of the forward companionway has rotted. I plan to make a replacement and am wondering whether I have to remove the two vertical pieces of trim to remove the bottom piece.
This would be the case if there is a fiberglass edge fits into a slot in the moulding.
Has anyone removed this piece?
