I want to replace the keel hoist cable for my Dawson. Does anyone know the length of the cable? I would like to have a new one made up prior to taking my boat to the marina and tying up their equipment. Thanks in advance.

Tom,

Sorry I missed your IM.

I don't know the exact length of the keel cable.  It is about 4 feet.  It is actually a very simple install provided you have the cable made up properly.

Couple of things you should be aware of if you are not familiar with it.  First, I would go to a rigging shop to have the cable made.  The weight and tension on the cable is too much for u clamps and they will bind.  I would have two swages placed on the bottom loop.  Second, make sure the pulley on the bottom turns freely.  If it doesn't the cable will eventually fail as it will slowly fray a strand at a time from the friction.

To replace the cable, drop the keel all the way down with slack in the cable.  Drive the pin out of the pulley on the keel.  Release the top part of the cable from the worm gear and feed down to the bottom.
To install reverse the process.  Just make sure the pulley turns.

The other point you may want to consider is to inspect and replace the pivot pin for the cable.  I wasn't involved with this on my boat as it was done by the previous owner.  The pivot pin is basically 1 inch stock of round solid stainless steel.  He said his old pin was almost worn through.  Based on the vintage of your boat and use this could be worth consideration.  Although I admit I have never heard of anyone loosing a keel from this.

Oops.  The pivot pin is for the keel not the cable.
