Does anyone have any special techniques for mast tuning?  How much mast rake is desireable, if any?Huh  Does anyone have any tuning tips as to how to get the most performance out of PD?   Thanks,   LL

From My original documentation: FORWARD LOWERS should be made slightly tighter that the aft lowers.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANY OF THE RIGGING BE SETUP "BAR-TIGHT" AND REMEMBER THAT THE TURNBUCKLE LOCK NUTS MUST BE TIGHTENED USING TWO WRENCHES.
This dockside tune must be followed up by actual final adjustments while sailing to windward in 5 to 10 knot breeze.  In these conditions, the head of the mast should not "hook" to windward.  If not straight, it would be more desirable to have the head "falloff" slightly to leeward.  This should give the mast a smooth, even curve from head to deck in stronger winds.  It will me necessary to sight along the back of the mast on each tack from deck level to see this curve and make the proper turnbuckle adjustments.  ALWAYS MAKE ANY TURNBUCKLE ADJUSTMENTS ON THE LEE SIDE WHERE THERE IS NO STRAIN ON THE SHROUD AND IMMEDIATELY TIGHTEN THE LOCK NUTS!  Special attention should be given to the initial stretch of the uppers and a further gradual stretch of all rigging over the first few hard sails.
DOCKSIDE TUNING:  You'll want to have straight athwartships in the boat with a slight rake aft for most normal sailing conditions.  To achieve this we reccommend the following DOCKSIDE TUNING  to produce a "FIRM" rig which will have the headstay, backstay and uppers just firm with the lowers fairly loose.  Now the BACKSTAY maybe made slightly tighter to "hook" the top of the mast aft.  You should now stand facing the mast, reach out and pull any shroud, and see the mast move in that direction.  Try to get the tension on both shrouds equal with about 1/2" to 2" of play in the UPPERS and 2" to 3" of play in the LOWERS.
