I read on one bulletin board where a guy made the letters on his computer, then cut them out and traced them on sticky shelf paper.  I think this would work but I think it would be alot better if you went to a motorcycle store and bought the sticky vinyl paper riders use on their number plates.  I am going to try this this year.

I would use the adhesive decals that a sign shop makes for signs.  You can design your letters or image in any fashion you want and have any signmaker make the decal for you.  They hold up extremely well and can be removed if you should ever decide on a change.  Finished look is generally much nicer than painting unless you are very good.

I once worked at a boat yard where lettering was done with "One Shot" brand sign paint. It was available in 1/2 pt. cans at hardware or art supply stores. It usually lasted for a season or two before touch-up was required. Last 2 boats I used computer generated decals I purchased at a boat show. I was able to chose the style, color and size. It went on easy and still looks great.
