Attached is a picture of a poorly patched mounting hole just outside of the rear companionway. The previous owner thought it was to mount a mizzen mast. I think it might be where a tiller was mounted. My boat is a 1973 Midship and  has a Edson wheel mounted just forward of the engine bay. Do all of the boats have this hole?

Hi BeeRanch
If your boat has tee shaped chain plates just below and outboard of the aft cabin windows it was for a mizzen mast, if not, the boat had tiller steering.

No chain plates for a mizzen.

I think I will make a  stainless steel cover plate for the hole.

If it was a spot for a tiller, perhaps Bob Dubuque may know.  It would make sense if you now have Edson Steering.  Edson was not used on the early boats.  To my limited knowledge, only the actual Parker Dawson boats had Edson.  My hull 270 has Don Allen Steering.

So tell us.  Is your steering encased cables, or wire over pulleys.  At least two other members have modified their early steering using Edson Parts.  Please describe what you have and how it is attached to the rudder.

The hole is for the tiller mount.  Mine is in the same place and same shape.

Need to get more sailing in.  Feeling the season slipping away.

My steering is a pull-pull system with encased cables. The steering was stiff so I invesigated and here is what I found:

The brackets holding the cables on both sides are bent causing the cable to pull at an angle. I have fabricated new brackets but I have not installed them yet. Right now I am doing extensive surgery on my rudder. I will post pictures soon. Hopefully the patient will survive.
