My Vire has never been reliable and I have lost all patience. Want to put an outboard on the boat and would like to hear what choices have been made, and any second thoughts. Would like it to be as light as possible, though powerful enough to power into 20 knts of wind. If any one has pictures of the cable run, or control mounting in the cockpit it would also be appreciated. Length of shaft is the other major consideration, want to be able to power in some waves and also be able to tilt it up. Any ideas of costs to install are also welcome.
Thanks much. Hate being out of commission!
Bob

Bob: Why an outboard? I had my Yanmar 8 hsp rebuilt for $2,000 and found out later I could have installed a new Universal 10 hsp for not much more and it would fit the available space without modification. (Or, so I was told, including in one message on this site,) I've had an outboard on my other boat for years. The only advantage I can see is that when it fails, you take it off, throw it out, and replace it without any mess. Cavitation in rough seas and an unbalanced weight hanging on the stern are issues. Not to mention an awkward pull on the helm and lack of steerage because the propulsion is aft and off center of the rudder. An inboard gives you extra ballast low on the centerline and it is, apparently, what the hull was designed for. If you go with an outboard, I'll be interested to see how the installation looks and works.

Bob, Go with the longest shaft outboard and an outboard bracket with the greatest amount of travel. Controls would be specific to your motor and cockpit layout. Can't hurt to have an outboard option in place. I am toying with the idea of two trolling motors mounted on either end of the transom using electric trailer jacks so that the motors could be raised for sailing. Lenco Marine has the Lenco Drive system that uses a trimtab type motor adjustment but the components can be purchased seperatly and adapted to mount on the trailer jacks. It would be a 36 volt setup for a total of 210# of thrust and 360 degree control with a joystick. Erick

Thinking of an outboard due to the constant hassles with my engine. Cannot find any info on the Universal 10hp. Do you have any info on it. An inboard is better no question. Anyone install a new yanmar without cockpit modification?

Can anyone tell me what length shaft they are using, 20" or 25". I would like the longest possible, though don't want to drag the prop.

Going with 9.8 Tohatsu with remote - $2,652.99 shipped, has to be installed by a Tohatsu dealer. Ordered it, and the Garelick Bracket 71091 $390.89 shipped from Defender. Much cheaper than http://www.onlineoutboards.com/, who by the way were incredibly rude, and hard to deal with. Would avoid them like the plague. Installation should be $150-200 @ $50 per hour. Hoping that with the bracket's 15.5" travel, that I will be able to pull the engine up without tilting it. Will let you know if it works. Cannot wait to get back out sailing. Bob

Sorry it took me so long to reply about the Universal diesel. Bob, I see you're all set with the outboard decision and it sounds good. For anyone interested: The Universal M3-20B looks like a fit without modifications and much higher hsp than the original Yanmar. It is sold by Westerbeke now. www.westerbeke.com26.5 inches long x 18.8 wide x 20.1 high. 241 lbs. I can't find the original posting or reference about the PD26 installation I read, but I do still have pix I downloaded and saved from the posting.

Nice to see it is possible. http://www.westerbeke.com/ProductBrochures/UNIVENG,%20M3-20B.pdfLooks like that engine is about 20HP. Good look on the repower. We need photos! -j

My prop was a two blade, pushed to boat quite well when the engine ran. Extremely happy with the outboard. So great to know it is going to start.
