Chris,
I'll give you a call today after San Francisco beats New England. I have some concerns myself about the rudder. We should talk.

Steve, Nice talking with you today. Sorry about the beating the Pats gave the 49ers. I love the 9ers. I use to work at Candlestick as Security for the Giants and 9ers games. Miss the Bay area. But Pats have always been my team, seeing as I was born and raised in NE. Hope to see you when you arrive in NE.[ ] Chris Chris Karo s/v Kimberly Marie Midship 25 Plymouth MA ~~~~~_/)~~~~~

A rash of rudder problems going around. Marcia up in anchorage had her's ripped clean off. I need to think out an emergency rudder/steering system, perhaps a pintel/gudgon/tiller affair with a plywood rudder.
Any surf board shop should be able to work one up in no time.

Herb,
That is a great idea. As a matter of fact, thats the first thing that came to my mind when my rudder broke. Why don't I have an emergency rudder? I'm working on a new rudder, and also an emergency system. I'll keep this forum informed with what I come up with. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm aware of two companies that offer replacement rudders. One is conventional "Foam and Fiberglass," construction, the other forms the shape from solid polyethylene sheets.
First is FOSS FOAM PRODUCTS of FLORIDA, the other is IDASAILOR MARINE in Boise, Idaho.
How bad should we feel? " These have lasted around 30 years.
The metalwork on our boat is non standard, and I'll have to have someone build the rudder using the scabbard to fit it. Chris is talking of plywood in order to get back on the water quickly for his trip south. There is a boat in California that has already done that. (This is the Electric Boat )
Speaking of Chris's trip south. There are at least two boats that have made the trip from up north down to Florida. Chris will be the third.

A friend with a Catalina 22 had one of the plastic rudders made and was quite happy with it. Would seem to be quite easy to fabricate on your own.
